New ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Images Tease Curious Pairings, Surprising Reveals!!! Check It Out!!

With Black Panther now finally out in theaters (and destroying box office records in the process), Disney’s marketing machine is ready to focus full attention on Avengers: Infinity War. It appears this week is when that marketing campaign kicks into the next gear, as Entertainment Weekly is doling out extensive coverage as part of this week’s new issue, including a bevy of new images that can be seen below. While Infinity War is technically Avengers 3, it’s actually the first of a two-part installment that will bring a definitive conclusion to the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far. Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo directed both Infinity War and the untitled Avengers 4 back to back, and the idea is to bring together every single Marvel character ever to conclude a story that began with 2008’s Iron Man.

Why are things ending? Well, Thanos for one. The purple alien teased at the end of Joss Whedon’s The Avengers has been pulling levers behind the scenes throughout the MCU ever since, and Infinity War makes Thanos a fully-fledged character for the first time really, with Josh Brolin performing motion-capture for the role. Thanos is on the hunt for Infinity Stones which will grant him infinite power, and the Avengers are the only thing in his way.

These new Avengers: Infinity War images are curious to say the least. First there’s the image of Thanos, which shows him destroying a planet by pulling its moon out of orbit. That planet is actually Titan, the ruined home world of Thanos. Then there’s Don Cheadle’s Rhodes, who was last seen as a paraplegic after the events of Civil War. He’s standing upright next to fugitives Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), likely thanks to some fancy Tony Stark technology.

We also see Black Panther’s Shuri (Letitia Wright) chatting it up with Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), and as for Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) galactic transportation, EW says Gamora goes off on her own mission while Thor teams up with Rocket and Adolescent Groot for a mission of their own. So don’t expect to see the Guardians of the Galaxy all together for the whole film.

Peruse the new Avengers: Infinity War images below via EW and stay tuned for much, much more in the coming days and weeks. The film hits theaters on April 27th.
