During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment team expressed their confidence in James Wan’s Aquaman film.
After making appearances in Batman v Superman and Justice League, Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry will finally lead his own standalone film when Aquaman hits theaters this holiday season. While the critical and/or box office disappointments of previous DC Extended Universe films (Wonder Woman arguably being the only exception) has some fans concerned about Aquaman, Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich recently praised director James Wan and his team’s work on the DC movie:
“James has done an incredible job with his team. The film is taking you to a different place and imagining the underwater world in a way you haven’t seen before.”
Producer Peter Safran also stated that the film sets the DC Universe on “the right path”:
“[It’s] got the great action you expect, it’s got a lot of great humor, it works on so many levels … it’s a testament to James’ unique vision. I think it’s an extraordinary step in DC Universe that sets it on the right path.”
Former DC Entertainment president and CCO Geoff Johns added that James Wan’s Aquaman film will offer audiences unique and beautiful visuals:
“The underwater stuff has never been executed like this before. The visual effects shots coming in are just beautiful. James can switch modes from horror to big bright colorful action to really emotional scenes. He’s so able to hit all these different genres.”
Plot details for Aquaman are currently under wraps, though the film centers on the King of Atlantis and will dive much deeper into the character’s past as it explores the discovery of his powers and his reluctance to accept his role as King.
Directed by James Wan and written by Will Beall, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, Amber Heard as Mera, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Patrick Wilson as Orm Marius/Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry, Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, and Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko.
Aquaman is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on December 21, 2018.
