Hopefully you’re caught up on HBO’s Game of Thrones, because last night’s epic episode “The Long Night” was one for the history books. While the ultimate fate of most of our favorite characters has yet to be decided, this episode went a long way towards showing off the impressive and talented crew behind the scenes of the storied production. You don’t take the easy road to pull off a nearly hour-long battle sequence spread out over multiple locations, featuring hundreds of extras, and boasting special effects of everything from a burning trench full of sharpened logs to reanimated wights and dragon fights.
Thankfully, this 40-minute behind-the-scenes video highlights just how much hard work and planning went into this insane battle sequence. It features episode director Miguel Sapochnik (“Hardhome”, “Battle of the Bastards”) walking viewers through the grueling process of shooting the battle over an 11-week period of night shoots, along with commentary from cast and crew alike. You’ll also learn all sorts of technical insights, like the fact that Winterfell’s flaming trench was comprised of 900 steel logs (to keep burning during multiple shoots) and 16 massive troughs filled with propane to provide enough flame. All that and more await you below!
