Looking for a new soapy drama to keep you hooked? As ever, Netflix has you covered, and the latest star-studded, unusually punctuated series on the lineup is What/If. The series comes from Revenge creator Mike Kelley and stars Renée Zellweger as a mysterious tech investor, who stirs up some drama when she makes an indecent proposal to a young pair of ambitious newlyweds.
Sexy, soapy shenanigans are on full display in the first trailer, which goes heavy on Zellweger’s monologuing and icy seductress mode. She also fires an arrow at Jane Levy‘s head and even still, this trailer is a pretty slow affair. I get that you need to lead with your A-lister, but it doesn’t give the trailer much energy. Hopefully, the show has a more engaging vibe.
Executive produced by showrunner Mike Kelley, What/If also has some A-list talent behind the camera in the form of Robert Zemeckis, who produces alongside Melissa Loy, Alex Gartner, Charles Roven, Jack Rapke. The series also stars Blake Jenner, Samantha Ware, Keith Powers, Daniella Pineda, Juan Castano, John Clarence Stewart, Dave Annable, and Westworld standout Louis Herthum. All ten episodes of What/If will debut on Netflix worldwide on May 24. For now, get a taste of the decadent dramatics in the trailer below.
Here’s the official synopsis for Netflix’s What/If:
Neo-noir social thriller WHAT/IF explores the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things. The first season of the Netflix original series focuses on a mysterious woman’s lucrative, but dubious offer to a cash-strapped pair of San Francisco newlyweds.
