Indeed, another year of incredible movies comes to an end and what a year it been. While superhero fatigue appeared in full form (with the exception of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), the last 12 months saw some spectacular cinematic feats unfold, particularly with the Barbenheimer phenomenon that made it seem as though cinema reached peak pervasiveness this year. That is of course, until the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike pretty much insured that many tentpole features got pushed to next year or later, and saw actors and writers manning the picket lines rather than promoting their films. Yet, looking back the year saw an array of new voices rise and legendary names like Martin Scorsese and Alexander Payne reassert their presence. Overall, it was a great year for many genres, particularly horror and drama. Yes, I did not see every single release this year, however, from what I have seen this are some of the best of the list, according to my viewing experience:
- Oppenheimer
- Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
- The Holdovers
- Killers of the Flower Moon
- Air
- Maestro
- The Creator
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
- Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One
- John Wick: Chapter 4
- How to Blow Up a Pipeline
- Saltburn
- Past Lives
- BlackBerry
- Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.
- Tetris
- Dumb Money
- Nimona
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
- Flora and Son
