‘The Rookie’: Another Spin-Off is in the Works!!

ABC is doubling down on its Rookie franchise. Following the success of the hit procedural the network is in early development on a second offshoot, after the cancellation of The Rookie: Feds, as per a report by Deadline this morning. Unlike its predecessor, which ventured into FBI territory, the new series will remain squarely in the world of law enforcement, similar to that of its original series. This new version of the show comes, once again, from The Rookie creator Alexi Hawley and will focus on a male cop in Washington state, embarking on a new chapter in life, which is a nice continuation of the “second act” theme that we’ve gotten used to via Nathan Fillion‘s John Nolan, who is the LAPD’s oldest rookie. The series is a streaming monster, and it’s Hulu‘s second highest watched drama with over 500 million hours viewed since its 2018 debut—nearly half of which were amassed in the last year alone.

Fans are still discovering that show and will continue for years to come. That’s the staying power of a good drama,” Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich said earlier this year. Now, ABC are hoping to make the most of the momentum by bringing more Rookie to the screens.

What Can We Expect from ‘The Rookie’ Season 7?

The mainline series returns on Tuesday, January 7, and it will resume straight after a major cliffhanger when a host of bad guys that John Nolan and the precinct had been in pursuit of managed to get away unscathed, which suggested a bigger task at hand for the team when we return to the series. Hawley confirmed that the villains would return in Season 7, some earlier than others. “They [Season 7 villains] will definitely resurface at different times. As you know, Jenna’s about to have a baby in real life, so we probably won’t see [Bailey] for the first few episodes because of that. As a result, we aren’t sure when we’ll see Jason. But yes, I think we’re looking at how we can spread stuff out so we’re not just all diving into all of it at the beginning,” he told TV Line.

Watch the Season 7 premiere of The Rookie on ABC on Tuesday, January 7, and catch up with past seasons on Hulu before the new one debuts. .
