‘Star Wars’: Lucasfilm Still Hasn’t Received a Script for Taika Waititi’s Proposed Film!!

Rumblings across the galaxy came out today via a new Deadline interview with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, who has finally shed some light on a slew of upcoming Star Wars projects. While a heap of films are in the works, one that remains extremely mysterious is a feature being helmed by Taika Waititi — but according to Kennedy, that project is still alive, if a bit delayed.

I keep waiting for Taika and he is working with another writer now. He’s so busy. I love him, I think if we ever do get a script from Taika, it’s going to be fantastic. I already saw a first act that I loved, but tying him down it’s tricky,” Kennedy said. Plot details about Waititi‘s film remain unknown, but it’s clear that Kennedy is a fan of his work, given how she spoke about one of his prior MCU projects, Thor: Ragnarok:

That’s exactly the tone we’re always looking for with filmmakers who can pull that off. It’s not like they’re a dime a dozen. You’re really trying to find the diamond in the rough and he’s one of them.”

Waititi’s ‘Star Wars’ Film Has Been Mired in Mystery

Very few things are known about Waititi’s upcoming Star Wars project. With the vast majority of other Star Wars films in the works, at least a basic time period or rough estimate has been revealed — not so with this one. The last major update we got about the film was in 2023, when Waititi said, “I’ve got a really good idea for it. It’s just as with all films, it’s this middle part. You’re like, ‘What’s going to happen?’” It was originally reported back in 2020 that Waititi was in talks to direct a Star Wars project, so this one has clearly been slow-moving.

One thing that isn’t slow-moving, though, is the pace of other Star Wars projects. This includes an upcoming film from director James Mangold that will focus on the dawn of the Jedi Order, set thousands of years before the Skywalker Saga. Also in the mix is a film, directed by Shawn Levy, that is set to star Ryan Gosling. Kennedy also revealed that film, as with the Daisy Ridley-led film being directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, will take place after the Skywalker Saga.

The next installment in the Star Wars film saga, The Mandalorian & Grogu, is set to be released on May 22, 2026.
