‘The Power’ Cancelled After One Season!!

For two seemingly endless years, fans have been waiting for an update regarding the fate of this Amazon Prime Video dystopian drama, and now, there’s finally news about whether it will return or not. The Power, starring Toni Collette, premiered on March 31, two years ago and ran until May 12, comprising nine episodes. Unfortunately, it appears that it will not return for another run, as TVLine has confirmed that The Power is, in fact, canceled.”

With The Power not getting a Season 2 after all these years, fans will no doubt be disappointed. Nevertheless, it wouldn’t hurt to rewatch the first season, which has earned generally favorable reviews. In addition to Collette, who portrays the mayor of Seattle, Margot Cleary-Lopez, the sci-fi thriller stars Auli’i Cravalho as Margot’s daughter Jos; John Leguizamo as her husband and Jos’ father Dr. Rob Lopez; Hallee Bush as Allie Montgomery, an adoptee into an American Bible Belt couple; Toheeb Jimoh as Tunde, an aspiring video journalist from Nigeria; and Ria Zmitrowicz as Roxy Monke, the illegitimate daughter of British gangster Bernie Monke, among others.

The American-British series was first announced in 2019 with Jane Featherstone and Reed Morano set to adapt Naomi Alderman’s book of the same name for Amazon. However, Morano exited in March 2022, opting not to be credited as director and executive producer. The Power was developed by Raelle Tucker, Alderman, Claire Wilson, and Sarah Quintrell, with its writers’ room featuring only female creatives, including Wilson, Quintrell, Whit Anderson, Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Rebecca Levene, Tucker, Sue Chung, Brennan Peters, and Michelle Hsu.

‘The Power’ Features Strong Female Characters

Speaking of women, not only does The Power feature an extraordinary all-female writers’ room, but it also focuses on strong female characters, which Collette once dished on in an interview with Vanity Fair. She recalled being impressed by these women after watching them in a teaser trailer:

When we were shooting, they showed us a teaser trailer cut together. It’s so incredibly cinematic, but I also found it so moving because seeing such a diverse range of female actors on screen was just so unusual. And it’s a story about women having agency, feeling safe and confident, and having some sense of sovereignty, so it’s very empowering to be a part of and to watch.”

As described by Prime Video, The Power sees teenage girls develop the ability (suddenly and without warning) to electrocute people at will. It features a cast of remarkable characters from London to Seattle, Nigeria to Eastern Europe, as the Power evolves from a tingle in teenagers’ collarbones to a complete reversal of the power balance of the world. The 2023 series won’t return for a sophomore season.
