Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana have been officially disavowed. Prime Video has sent out the burn notice for the two international spinoffs of its action-adventure Citadel franchise, cancelling them both after one season. Furthermore, Deadline reports that the second season of the flagship Citadel series, which was expected to be released this year, has been pushed back to 2026.
Citadel was an ambitious plan by Prime Video to launch a spy-themed series with a flotilla of international spinoffs, with the blockbuster-crafting Joe and Anthony Russo at the helm. However, reviews for the series have been underwhelming, Amazon executive Jennifer Salke (who shepherded the series) left the company last month, and the conglomerate’s recent acquisition of the James Bond franchise makes it somewhat redundant in the Prime Video stable of properties. Furthermore, the flagship series has been plagued with production problems and reshoots, making it one of the most expensive television series ever made. While Honey Bunny and Diana, which were set in India and Italy, respectively, were successful in their home countries, they apparently did not gain traction internationally. However, plotlines from those shows are now being incorporated into the Citadel flagship’s second season, which will be released in the spring of 2026.
What Is ‘Citadel’ About?
Citadel concerns a globe-spanning intelligence organization, Citadel, which contends with its subversive rival, Manticore. The flagship Citadel series centers around two Citadel agents and lovers, Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra). After a mission against Manticore goes wrong, the series picks up years later, with both of them having taken on new identities and seemingly possessing no memories of their past lives. Honey Bunny serves as a prequel to the series; it follows Citadel agents Raahi “Bunny” Gambhir (Varun Dhawan) and Hanimandakini “Honey” Raj (Samantha), who turn out to be Nadia’s parents. Diana, meanwhile, is something of a sequel: it takes place in the near-future of 2030, and concerns the titular Diana (Matilda De Angelis), who finds herself torn between Citadel and Manticore.
In addition to Honey Bunny and Diana, Prime Video also announced Citadel spinoffs that were set to take place in Mexico and Spain. However, given the fate of the other two spinoffs, the chances of those series coming to fruition looks slim.
Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana have been cancelled, while Citadel will return for its second season in 2026.
