If there is such a thing as a movie star anymore, Glen Powell certainly fits the bill, and now the A-lister has found his next project. Powell is set to star in an untitled comedy film from Universal Pictures, according to Deadline. The film will be directed by Judd Apatow, who has helmed some of the most well-known and recognizable comedies of the 21st century, so this clearly seems like a well-done match.
Details about the film remain slim. However, it was reported that the project will follow a country western music star whose life spirals out of control, with Powell likely set to play the musician. No other casting has been announced. A cowboy, western-type role wouldn’t exactly be unusual for Powell; the Texas native made waves for his portrayal of a rough, adventurous storm chaser when he worked with Universal for Twistersin 2024.
Powell also has a major behind-the-camera role, as he will be writing the script for the film alongside Apatow. The film will be produced by Apatow for his Apatow Productions banner, while Powell and Dan Cohen produce for Powell‘s Barnstorm production banner; the company signed a first-look deal with Universal earlier this year. Kevin Misher produces for Misher Films.
Powell and Apatow are a Big Combination
Powell and Apatow pack quite the punch for Universal. Powell has been acting since the early 2000s but made his breakthrough alongside Tom Cruise in 2023’s Top Gun: Maverick, which propelled him into superstardom. He has since made waves in the romantic comedy Anyone But You alongside Sydney Sweeney, as well as Twisters and the crime comedy Hit Man. He also has a slew of projects on his plate, including the highly anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s novel The Running Man from director Edgar Wright. There are also reports that he may be attached to a remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Apatow is responsible for some of the most well-known comedies of recent years. He made his mark in television in the 1990s with Freaks and Geeks before transitioning to film, where he has directed classic comedies like Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, This is 40, and Trainwreck. He is known for his longstanding ties to comedic actors like Seth Rogen, Jason Segal, and Paul Rudd. Acting also runs in his family, as he is married to actress Leslie Mann. Their daughters Iris Apatow and Maude Apatow are both well-known actresses too; both of them have appeared in their father’s films.
Powell‘s most recent film, Twisters, is streaming now.
