In lieu of any news about a potential fourth season for quite some time, Heartstopper fans just got a surprisingly unexpected update. Netflix has officially announced that Heartstopper will end with a feature-length film coming to Netflix instead of another season. The movie will be based on the sixth installment in creator Alice Osman’s book series, and she will also return to pen the screenplay for the film. Wash Westmoreland, previously known for his work on Earthquake Bird, Colette, and Still Alice, has been tapped to direct the Heartstopper movie, which does not yet have an official release date. Filming will begin this summer, and the story will follow the couple of Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke) as they deal with the challenges of a long-term relationship while Nick prepares for university and Charlie gains agency at school.
Locke and Connor have become known for their roles in Heartstopper, which have subsequently turned both of them into major stars. The sheer volume of their commitments in other projects is likely part of the reason the franchise is coming to an end with a movie instead of continuing with multiple seasons. Locke recently made his MCU debut as Wiccan in Agatha All Along, the 2024 Disney+ series that returned Kathryn Hahn to her WandaVision role of Agatha Harkness. Connor starred opposite Lupita Nyong’o and Pedro Pascal in one of the biggest movies of 2024, The Wild Robot, and he also can be seen in A24’s Warfare, the gritty war thriller from Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza. Both stars also have their hand in more upcoming projects.
What’s Streaming on Netflix Right Now?
If you’re already caught up on all three seasons of Heartstopper and are wondering what to watch before the movie arrives on the platform (likely next year), there are plenty of shows and movies to keep you occupied. WWE Monday Night Raw has jumped to the top spot following a record-breaking WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas, with Netflix‘s new original Western, Ransom Canyon, following closely behind at #2. The latest season of Black Mirror is also sitting comfortably in the Netflix top 10, with Young Sheldon trailing it after Netflix added the seventh and final season of the hit prequel series.
The Heartstopper movie will begin production this summer.
