Nearly one year after Ryan Reynolds made his MCU debut in Deadpool & Wolverine, the star has finally delivered an update on his future as the Merc with a Mouth. Reynolds recently sat down for an interview with TIME Magazine, and as is often the case with big superhero stars, they couldn’t let him sneak out the door without a Deadpool question. When asked about what the future held for him as Deadpool, Reynolds spoke about his history with the character, citing his inspiration for the first three Deadpool movies as shame, family, and redemption. He also highlighted the different iterations of Deadpool 3 that he pitched to Disney, including a stop-motion and one-shot Sundance movie. Before wrapping up the question, Reynolds revealed that he’s writing a new ensemble project that also teased his future with the biggest groups such as the X-Men or the Avengers:
“I’m writing a little something right now, that’s, I don’t know, it’s an ensemble. But, I like that he’s isolated. If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we’re at the end. That’s his wish fulfillment, and you can’t give him that.”
There were talks of a third Deadpool movie for years, even after Disney bought Fox, but it wasn’t until the announcement that Hugh Jackman would reprise his role as Wolverine in the film that things took off. Fans were skeptical upon this major news drop that Jackman’s return would sour the character’s satisfying ending in Logan, but this is immediately addressed in Deadpool & Wolverine when Wade Wilson digs up Logan’s corpse and uses it to kill a mob of TVA agents. Deadpool & Wolverine can bring back Jackman as Wolverine while also not harming Logan’s legacy via the Multiverse. This method is controversial in the eyes of many, but it also allows for Marvel to make other bold choices, like bringing in Robert Downey Jr. to play Doctor Doom, the new feature villain of this saga.
Is Deadpool in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ or ‘Secret Wars’?
Ryan Reynolds was not given a chair in Marvel Studios’ Doomsday casting announcement that broke the internet a few weeks ago, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t have a role to play in the movie. Other names, such as Benedict Cumberbatch, were also among the roster of heroes not to be officially announced as part of the Doomsday cast, but Cumberbatch has confirmed his role in the film. There are likely plenty of names being kept under wraps for the Doomsday and Secret Wars casts, but fans can only hope that Reynolds and potentially even Jackman are among them.
It has yet to be officially announced where Deadpool will show up next.
