Jane Austen adaptations are nothing new, and with 2025 being the 250th Anniversary of her birth, they have never been more relevant. Thankfully, the year also marks two decades since the theatrical debut of Joe Wright‘s Pride & Prejudice, sending the movie back into theaters and putting eyes back on Austen‘s timeless romance tale. Now, thanks to this re-release, Pride & Prejudice‘s box office haul has hit a brand-new milestone, 20 years on from its first. Officially, Pride & Prejudice has now surpassed the $130 million mark, split between a $42 million domestic total and $88 million in overseas markets.
Pride & Prejudice has surpassed this milestone thanks to a consistent performance in domestic theaters following its initial re-release opening weekend, in which it earned over $2.8 million and finished eighth in the top ten earners. On Monday, April 21, and Tuesday, April 22, Pride & Prejudice earned just shy of $1 million in total, taking the film past the latest milestone and even outearning the likes of Jason Statham’s A Working Man and the controversial Rachel Zegler-led Snow White. This new total is just another figure worth celebrating for Wright and co., with this Austen adaptation already one of the highest-earning of its kind in cinema history, as well as being the ninth highest-grossing movie in production company Focus Features’ entire history.
Not just a success at the box office, even finishing 2005 as one of the year’s 25 highest-grossing movies internationally, Pride & Prejudice was also a critical hit, earning praise from all corners of the globe. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Pride & Prejudice boasts a huge “certified fresh” 87% from critics, as well as an even more impressive 89% score from audiences. Unlike other movies currently in theaters with a smaller sample size of reviews, Pride & Prejudice‘s audience rating is averaged from over 250,000 user reviews, making this an undeniably accurate summation of the general opinion felt towards the movie.
Another ‘Pride and Prejudice’ Adaptation is Also Celebrating a Major Anniversary This Year
Ten years before Wright, Keira Knightley, and Matthew Macfadyen were earning endless praise for their adaptation of the classic novel, another Pride and Prejudice retelling was earning just as much, if not more, critical and audience applause. Released in 1995, a six-episode BBC miniseries had the benefit of having more time to explore this timeless romance in more detail, also boasting the huge talent of both Jennifer Ehle as Lizzie and an iconic Colin Firth turn as Mr. Darcy, with the former even earning a BAFTA TV Award for her trouble. On Rotten Tomatoes, the adaptation has an 88% critical score and an eye-watering 96% from audiences, a notable increase on the big-budget movie version that is currently re-entering our theaters.
Pride & Prejudice is currently in theaters.
