Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs are coming back — the new Miami Vice project just took a major step forward. Collider can confirm that Universal Pictures has tapped Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) to direct a new Miami Vice feature film, with Dan Gilroy (Andor, Nightcrawler) writing the script. Casting for the project has not yet begun, but Kosinski will produce along with Dylan Clark. This comes not long before Kosinski will venture to the world of high-octane sports racing for his next movie, F1. The racing film stars Oscar-winners Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem, and it’s set for release on June 23. This new Miami Vice project is expected to follow Kosinski’s work on F1, but there’s currently no release date attached and no planned date for production to start.
F1 won’t be the first project for Kosinski since Top Gun: Maverick — shortly after the aviation thriller hit theaters and earned over $1 billion at the box office, Kosinski teamed up with Marvel veteran Chris Hemsworth for Spiderhead. The psychological thriller, which also stars Miles Teller, was met with a mostly negative reception, which led to scores of 39% from critics and 30% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Tom Cruise’s $1 billion-earning legacy sequel was the first movie Kosinski had directed in five years at that point, with his most recent outing coming in Only the Brave, the firefighting biopic starring Miles Teller and Josh Brolin. Kosinski is also known for his work on Oblivion, the 2013 space sci-fi epic starring Tom Cruise, and Tron: Legacy, the 2010 sci-fi sequel starring Jeff Bridges alongside Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde.
Who Could Play the Next Sonny Crockett?
It has yet to be announced who will play the next version of Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, but there’s an obvious choice for one-half of the partnership. Glen Powell is one of the biggest stars in the world right now, and with his work remaking other projects such as Twisters and The Running Man, he’s proven to have an interest in older projects. Powell also has all the swagger that the next Sonny Crockett needs, and the recognition to help fill seats at the box office. Although he stays booked and busy, this could be a project worth readjusting the schedule with Kosinski and Gilroy now involved.
The new Miami Vice movie does not have a cast or production window.
