A new remake of the 1968 sci-fi film Barbarella will be coming to screens soon courtesy of Sony Pictures with writer Jane Goldman attached to the project. The project will see A-list actress, Sydney Sweeney, attached to star in the upcoming remake. The project is based on the French comic book of the same name, but actual details surrounding the upcoming project remain largely vague and very thin. Sweeney was brought on as the project’s leading star and an executive producer in 2022, and production has stalled somewhat in the three years since. Despite the slow pace and years of silence, Sweeney has revealed that Barbarella‘s development is still pressing on.
“I was just in London and had a meeting to discuss the story and the script,” Sweeney revealed in a recent conversation. “I can’t say too much, but it’s really going to come together in a very, very fun and big way. It’s a long process. I don’t think people realise how long some things can take, but it’s gonna be worth the wait…” Quizzed on if the remake of the 1968 sci-fi film remains on her radar, the actress responded, saying, “Yes, it is! That’s what I’m saying! My thirties, I’ve really got to step it up!”
What Is ‘Barbarella’ About?
Jane Fonda led the 1968 sci-fi cult classic based on the comics of the same name by Jean-Claude Forest. Set in the distant future, in the 41st-century to be precise, and armed with the deadly positronic ray, Fonda‘s Barbarella is sent to find and stop an evil scientist, Durand Durand, who had created a weapon called the deadly Positronic Ray capable of destroying the human race. Barbarella’s journey was a unique one, filled with many interesting characters making the space adventurer’s acquaintance. Barbarella also gets drawn into a planetary rebellion, mind you. Sweeney’s Barbarella will see Edgar Wright attached to direct from a script penned by Goldman.
Fonda‘s film has turned into a cult classic in the decades since its release, but the road to making the film was not a straightforward one. In the years since its premiere, there have been multiple attempts to remake the sci-fi film, with one attempt featuring Rose McGowan in the title role and Robert Rodriguez attached to direct. That fell through with both leaving the project with Robert Luketic directing and Anne Hathaway rumored for the lead, with Sweeney‘s take the latest one. Besides the upcoming film led by the Anyone But You star, a television series directed by Nicholas Winding Refn is also in the works with writer Blake Northcott penning a script.
Barbarella is currently streaming on Paramount+.
