‘Avengers: Doomsday’: New Set Image Sees Robert Downey Jr. Bulk Up to Play Doctor Doom!! Check It Out!!

Avengers: Doomsday officially kicked off production not long ago after announcing its cast via a chair stunt that had millions of people on pins and needles for hours. While there were some shocking announcements, like Channing Tatum’s return as Gambit and Fox X-Men stars like James Marsden coming back for another adventure, the first name attached to star in the film was Robert Downey Jr. Marvel announced at San Diego Comic-Con last year that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty had been reworked to Avengers: Doomsday, and Downey Jr. would return to the MCU to play the titular villain, Doctor Doom. With production now in full swing, Downey just shared the best look at himself behind-the-scenes of Doomsday, and it seems the former Iron Man actor has been hitting the weights in preparation to take on The Avengers.

Similar to the year leading up to Avengers: Infinity War, there are far more questions than answers about Avengers: Doomsday. The biggest one on everyone’s mind is how a former Iron Man actor is going to play the next feature villain of an entire saga. Doctor Doom is famous for wearing a mask that hides his face, but Marvel certainly isn’t bringing back its prized possession in Downey just to hide him behind a metal mask for two movies. Many Avengers also have a history with Tony Stark, having worked with him to take down Thanos (Josh Brolin), and will recognize him once they see his face. It’s unclear if this version of Victor Von Doom will be tied to an alternate Tony Stark in any capacity, but Marvel certainly has some explaining to do.

Where Is ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Filming?

Avengers: Doomsday recently kicked off production in London, but Anthony Mackie recently shared a video from behind the scenes of the team out in the snow. It’s unclear if this video was shared from a massive sound stage in London or if the team was moving off-site to film scenes elsewhere, but it has generated speculation that they are filming scenes set in the fictional country of Latveria, home of Doctor Doom in Marvel Comics. No one knows when Doomsday will wrap production, but the team will have its work cut out getting the film ready for release at the start of next May.

Avengers: Doomsday is currently in production and will be released on May 1, 2026.
