Tom Cruise remains one of the biggest film stars in the world, and now it appears that he is teaming up with another soon-to-be action heroine for a major blockbuster. Cruise is in talks to star alongside Ana de Armas in the film Deeper, according to Deadline. The film is described as a deep-sea diving adventure with a supernatural twist, and with Cruise and de Armas in negotiations, it sounds like a unique take on the action genre.
Details about the film remain very light, given that Cruise and de Armas may not be fully onboard yet. However, Deeper will follow an astronaut who encounters a terrifying force while on a deep dive into a never-before-explored trench, according to a logline of the film from Deadline. Assuming that Cruise would play the astronaut, de Armas‘ part remains unclear, though the pair seems like a natural combination.
This film seems to finally be getting off the ground after years in development. It was first reported in 2016 that Bradley Cooper was set to star from a script by Max Landis, and Gal Gadot later became attached to the project. This didn’t pan out, nor did another attempt at developing the film with Idris Elba. But things appear bright for this adaptation, with Deadline reporting that Cruise wants it to be his next movie. Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman is reportedly set to helm the film from a script by Cruise‘s longtime Mission: Impossible collaborator, Christopher McQuarrie.
Cruise and de Armas Are Two Huge Names
Deeper now has two of the biggest names in Hollywood attached. It’s no surprise that this would be right up Cruise‘s alley; the actor, who will be in theaters later this month with his long-anticipated Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, is not one to shy away from heavy stuntwork. This type of underwater film gels with him too, as The Final Reckoning will feature a significant diving sequence involving a sunken submarine. Cruise, known for his work in other classics like Jerry Maguire, has also recently given hints about the potential for Top Gun 3.
De Armas didn’t start her career in action films, instead making a name in acclaimed projects like Knives Out and Blonde. But she has since gone down the action path, starring in the 2021 James Bond film No Time to Die as a CIA agent. She will really be ramping up her action work, though, when she stars in the upcoming Ballerina, a John Wick spinoff film that will follow a ballerina-turned-assassin who crosses paths with the franchise’s titular hitman, played by Keanu Reeves.
No release window for Deeper has been set. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is in theaters on May 23.
