‘Young Stalin’: ‘Shōgun’ Star Cosmo Jarvis to Play Europe’s Most Feared Dictator in New Biopic!!

Following the FX phenomenon, Shōgun, Cosmo Jarvis has found another historical project to tide him over. Variety revealed that the actor has been tapped to lead a new historical venture, Young Stalin. Jarvis is slated to portray the titular figure who would become one of Europe’s most feared dictators. The project will be adapted from the novel by Simon Sebag Montefiore with Géla Babluani set to direct who teased the project in the following statement:

I’ve always been drawn to stories that live in the shadows, and there’s no shadow longer than Stalin’s. This isn’t a portrait of power — it’s a descent into the fire that forged it. With Cosmo, we have a lead actor who understands danger, charm and the fractures of identity.”

Young Stalin will focus on the early days of the Russian leader when he made a living as a bak robber before the Russian revolution. More of a thriller than a straight biopic, Variety noted that the film will feature a bank heist and show the criminal backdrop of Stalin’s upbringing.

Stalin’s early life as a bank-robber is an extraordinary and largely unknown story, driven by revolutionary zeal and characterized by violence, betrayal and lust for power,” executive producer Danny Cohen added. As Jarvis made his way in period pieces such as Peaky Blinders, the actor is no stranger to historical context and the criminal underworld.

Cosmo Jarvis Will Continue His ‘Shōgun’ Role

Cosmo Jarvis has continued his rise in historical fare. After his small role in Peaky Blinders, the actor led the captivating series Shōgun next to international treasure, Hiroyuki Sanada. The gripping story was based on the historical fiction tome by historical writer James Clavell and led to massive acclaim. While the series covered the entirety of the book and was only conceived as a limited series, the popularity of Shōgun practically begged the series to be continued.

Shōgun will have a Season 2 with Jarvis and Sanada returning in their respective roles. Jarvis played John Blackthorne in the first season, a naval navigator swept up in the politics of Japan against his will. The new season will take place 10 years after the events of the series and Toranaga’s (Sanada) Crimson Tide triumph. Season 2 will begin filming in early 2026 as the creatives of the series rush to meet the desire of the fans. Viewers can also look forward to Jarvis’ role in Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey and his new project, Young Stalin.
