With the most pivotal role of Laura Ingalls cast for the upcoming Little House on the Prairie reboot at Netflix, the streamer continues to build out its call sheet. Today, six new cast members have been announced. Jocko Sims, Warren Christie, Wren Zhawenim Gotts, Meegwun Fairbrother, Alyssa Wapanatǎhk, and Xander Cole have all been announced to join the project. Sims will play Dr. George Tann, Christie will play John Edwards, Gotts will play Good Eagle, Fairbother will play Mitchell, Wapanatǎhk will play White Sun, and Cole will play Little Puma. Earlier this month, Alice Halsey was announced for Laura Ingalls. The reboot will be another adaptation of the book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder rather than a reboot of the hit television series starring Melissa Gilbert. The reboot was announced earlier this year. In addition to Laura Ingalls, Luke Bracey is cast as Charles Ingalls, Crosby Fitzgerald is cast as Caroline Ingalls and Skywalker Hughes has been cast as Mary Ingalls.
The logline for the upcoming Netflix adaptation is as follows:
“Part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West, this fresh adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic semi-autobiographical Little House books offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.”
A New Interpretation Is Coming to ‘Little House on the Prairie’ Netflix Adaptation
The television series from 1974 is best remembered for its family-friendly, downright “wholesome” themes at times. Though, the series could be viewed through rose-colored glasses now fifty years on, because it didn’t shy away from the harder truths of life, original star Melissa Gilbert is already speaking out about criticisms that a new interpretation of Little House being “too woke” isn’t possible. She told The View, “I really wasn’t going to have any sort of comment. I support the project. It’s just like, you know, different versions of Little Women, it’s another… people’s interpretation of a classic story.” But after statements made by Megyn Kelly, Gilbert goes on to say on social media:
“Ummm… watch the original again. TV doesn’t get too much more “woke” than we did. We tackled: racism, addiction, nativism, antisemitism, misogyny, rape, spousal abuse and every other “woke” topic you can think of.”
The direction of the tone of the Netflix reboot remains to be seen as casting continues. You can watch past episodes now on Peacock.
