After nine absolutely entertaining episodes of Sprung, which debuted on Amazon Freevee on August 19, 2022, with two episodes released weekly afterward, fans anticipated the comedy’s return for another run. Even series creator Greg Garcia, who wrote and directed the show, remained hopeful in the summer of 2023 as he was still “waiting to see if Amazon wants to do more.” Unfortunately, it has now been confirmed via TVLine that Sprung will not be back for Season 2.
Led by Garret Dillahunt and set in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Sprung followed Jack, who, after spending nearly three decades in prison, is released and has to figure out where he will now live. He’s hell-bent on not getting back into a life of crime, but that poses a problem when his former cellmate, Rooster, offers him a room at his mother, Barb’s, house, on the condition that Jack joins their criminal enterprise.
Alongside Dillahunt, Sprung’s main cast included Martha Plimpton as Barb, Shakira Barrera as Gloria, Phillip Garcia as Rooster, Clare Gillies as Wiggles and James Earl as Melvin. Guest stars were Kate Walsh as Congresswoman Paula Tackleberry, Susan Ruttan as Lorraine, David Wells as Herb, Fred Grandy as Horace Tackleberry, Camden Garcia as Collin and Andre Jamal Kinney as Brett. Not only did Dillahunt star in the Freevee series, but he also executive produced with creator Garcia, Jonathan Berry and Michael Rotenberg.
What Happened in ‘Sprung’ Season 1 Finale?
The first and only season of Sprung, which has a 96% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, ended nearly three years ago. It also earned an 82% critics’ score on the review aggregator website, with the consensus stating:
“Sprung’s pandemic setting is sometimes more of a drag than a springboard for fresh ideas, but this bouncy sitcom bears all the genial hallmarks of creator Greg Garcia’s comedic touch, complete with a hilarious Martha Plimpton.”
In the Sprung series finale, which landed on Freevee on September 15, 2022, Jack and the crew scrambled to pull off the crime of their lives, which was almost jeopardized. Luckily, their plan worked, and they were able to get their $2.5 million. Gloria provided Jack with his new fake ID, and he decided to move to San Diego to be with his parents. He wanted Gloria to join him, but she wished to relocate to Miami. The duo then bid farewell to Barb and Rooster and went their separate ways.
Sprung has been cancelled after only one season.
