The long-discussed Joseph Kosinski big-screen reimagining of Miami Vice is now official. Not only has the film officially signed its Crockett and Tubbs, but it has a new title that perfectly captures its mission statement. The film will speed its way to theaters on August 6, 2027.
According to reports, Austin Butler (Elvis) and Michael B. Jordan (Sinners) have signed on to the latest film from Kosinski, who is coming off back-to-back theatrical hits in the form of Top Gun: Maverick and F1: The Movie. Kosinski will trade in his fighter jets and race cars for speed boats in the new film, which boasts the title Miami Vice ’85. The title proudly distinguishes itself from the 2006 Miami Vice film, which was set in then-contemporary Miami; Miami Vice ’85 will be a period piece, set in the 1980s. Inspired by the pilot and first season of the classic NBC series, the film will see mismatched partners Crockett and Tubbs brave the seamy underbelly of the Magic City as they hunt down Florida’s most dangerous criminals.
What Is ‘Miami Vice’ About?
Legendarily (and maybe apocryphally) pitched by NBC head Brandon Tartikoff as “MTV cops,” Miami Vice starred Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett, a loose cannon cop who lived on a sailboat and owned a pet alligator, and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo Tubbs, a level-headed New York transplant looking for his brother’s killer. The series was unlike anything seen on TV to that point; the series made use of movie-style cinematography, the latest fashion trends, and an array of contemporary popular music. Johnson and Thomas became icons of ’80s cool, and musicians clamored to have their songs featured on the show’s soundtrack. The series was created by Anthony Yerkovich, a TV veteran, and executive produced and showrun by Michael Mann, who lent his cinematic sense of style to the production. The series would end after five seasons, but Mann would write and direct a big-screen version in 2006, with Jamie Foxx as Tubbs and Colin Farrell as Crockett; it received a mixed reception at first, but has since become a cult film among Mann devotees.
Kosinski will produce and direct the film, from a script by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler); Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick) wrote an earlier draft. It will be filmed for IMAX, and released by Universal Pictures.
Miami Vice ’85 will premiere in theaters on August 6, 2027.
