This fall, PBS Masterpiece is going for The Gold. The acclaimed BBC series, which stars Jack Lowden and Hugh Bonneville in the true story of one of the biggest crimes in British history, is coming to public television this fall. A new trailer reveals the series will premiere on Masterpiece on Sunday, October 5.
The trailer kicks off in 1983, when a group of six masked robbers invade Heathrow International Trading Estate, a warehouse operated by Brink’s and MAT Transport. The sextet make off with one of the largest hauls in the history of crime: three tonnes of gold bullion. Catching the thieves becomes the top priority for the police, led by Brian Boyce (Bonneville, Downton Abbey). Meanwhile, the robbers, led by Philip Noyce (Lowden, Slow Horses), are busy melting down the gold and selling it, a process that sends them to surprising places and involves surprising people. The police may be too late, thanks to the fungible nature of precious metals: as one expert states, “If you’re looking for the gold, it’s all around you.” However, that doesn’t mean the criminals are in the clear: their true enemy may be among them.
Who Is the Creative Team Behind ‘The Gold’?
In addition to Bonneville and Lowden, The Gold boasts a glittering cast of stars. It also features Charlotte Spencer (Ted Lasso), Emun Elliott (Sexy Beast), Tom Cullen (Becoming Elizabeth), Stefanie Martini (The Last Kingdom), Sam Spruell (Fargo), Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation), Adam Matthew Nagaitis (Chernobyl), Daniel Ings (The Gentlemen), and Dominic Cooper (Preacher). It also features recurring roles for Peter Davison (Doctor Who), Silas Carson (Star Wars: The Phantom Menace), and Ruth Bradley (The Wonder), among others. The series was created and written by Neil Forsyth (Guilt), and directed by Aneil Karia and Lawrence Gough.
The Gold premiered on the BBC in 2023, and is available internationally via Paramount+, but PBS Masterpiece will be its American broadcast premiere. It currently holds a 92% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and will return for a second and final season to complete the saga of the Brink’s-Mat robbery. Tom Hughes (Victoria) and Stephen Campbell Moore (Masters of the Air) will join the cast for the second season, which Forsyth says will be “even more expansive, surprising and international.” No release date has yet been announced for the second season.
The Gold will premiere on PBS Masterpiece on Sunday, October 5, 2025.
