David E. Kelley is no stranger to a massive success story. The writer and producer has numerous beloved titles under his belt, from The Practice to Ally McBeal to Big Little Lies. For the most part, everything the creative touches turns into television gold, so when he struck out with Apple TV+ to bring Scott Turow’s legal thriller novel Presumed Innocent to the small-screen, his attachment destined it for greatness. The show became a top-watched favorite for the streamers, so, with audiences wanting more, despite being billed as a miniseries, it was eventually announced that there would be a Season 2. But what about after that?
The sophomore installment will leave the characters from Turow’s novel behind and flip through the pages of another book — Jo Murray’s upcoming Dissection of a Murder. Crime thriller fans needn’t worry as the new source material is in the same vein as the tale that came before it, so there are plenty more twists and turns in store for those who tune in for Season 2. While speaking with Deadline, Kelley shared his optimism about Season 3 and beyond, revealing,
“We chose Dissection of a Murder for year two. But in success, it could go on beyond that.”
Explaining how the team landed on an anthology style for the show’s future versus leaving it behind with just one season, Kelley explained,
“I think that the genesis of it first came from Apple [asking], ‘Have we got another one in us?’ And we didn’t, for these characters. But the themes of Presumed Innocent, the psychological thriller, the elements of infidelity and betrayal, that’s timeless. So we thought maybe there’s other IP that we can mine the same terrain, so people can feel they’re coming to the same series, but with different storytellers. We thought, if we find the right material, we will do it, and if we don’t, we won’t.”
What We Know So Far About ‘Presumed Innocent’ Season 2
While audiences might be sad to let go of the characters from the first season and attach themselves to a fresh plot, Kelley’s words should certainly instill hope that he and the rest of the team have found the perfect book in Murray’s Dissection of a Murder. Though the title hasn’t yet hit shelves (it’s scheduled for a release next spring), we have an idea of the drama that awaits through its brief synopsis. The book follows primary character Leila Reynolds, a defense attorney who has just been assigned her first murder case. Doubting her abilities, it isn’t the job that Leila wants, but the client is dead-set on having her by his side throughout the legal process. As the dirty laundry of the case begins to air, Leila struggles to keep her secrets buried and pushes forward with the task at hand.
As of right now, no release window has been set for Presumed Innocent Season 2, but Season 1 is now streaming on Apple TV+.
