‘All You Need Is Kill’: ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Anime Movie Finally Acquired for Distribution!!

Live. Die. Repeat. Over a decade ago, we became familiar with that motto when we saw Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible film series) fight for his life, only to start over after he dies multiple times in Edge of Tomorrow. What many people don’t know is that the blockbuster hit is based on a light novel by Japanese author Hiroshi Sakurazaka. This year, the story is being adapted again — but this time as an anime movie. GKIDS announced today that All You Need Is Kill has been acquired for distribution, and the first screening is already set up. The movie will debut at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival this weekend.

All You Need Is Kill will tell the time travel story from a different perspective than the light novel and Edge of Tomorrow. The story takes place in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, and centers around a gigantic alien plant that is able to emit electromagnetic waves and a high-concentration gas, which means that Earth’s environment starts deteriorating on a massive scale — and fast. In that scenario, a team of volunteers is recruited to try to help minimize the damage. Among them are Rita (voiced by Ai Mikami) and Keiji (Natsuki Hanae).

The trailer for All You Need Is Kill reveals that the adaptation will take on a lot more psychedelic tones than Edge of Tomorrow in order to create a distinct and gorgeous look. However, it looks like the core is still there, with the character waking up several times on the same day after dying violent deaths. She registers it on the back of her hand, writing down how many times she remembers living the same day. We will guess at least as high as 92.

‘All You Need Is Kill’ Hails From an Acclaimed Animation Studio

All You Need Is Kill is directed by Kenichiro Akimoto, who previously worked on animated titles like Berserk and Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. The screenplay is adapted by Yuichiro Kido, who previously wrote episodes from high-profile titles such as Dr. Stone, The Seven Deadly Sins, Fruits Basket, and Star Wars: Visions. The animation studio responsible for bringing All You Need Is Kill to life is Studio4ºC, which previously released Children of the Sea, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, and the highly acclaimed Tekkonkinkreet.

Aside from All You Need Is Kill, this year’s Annecy festival will also exhibit titles like ChaO, Lesbian Space Princess, and Jinsei. The event takes place this weekend. All You Need Is Kill is yet to get a regular theatrical release unveiled.
