Glen Powell to Star in New Firefighter Movie Directed by Ron Howard!!

Glen Powell’s career has been heating up, and now Powell himself will be heating up, quite literally, for his next role. Powell is set to star in a film for Amazon MGM Studios about a firefighter, according to Deadline, with the project to be directed by Ron Howard. Howard is no stranger to this type of production, having directed the iconic firefighter film Backdraft in 1991, so this seems like a perfect fit.

Plot details about the film remain slim. However, it reportedly comes from an original idea by Christina Hodson, and will follow Powell as a Texas firefighter who must face wildfires sweeping across his state. At the same time, he tackles personal battles with his childhood friend, who is now also a firefighter. It’s unsurprising that Powell would be in line for this role, as he was previously reported to be in the running for a remake of Backdraft, which as of yet hasn’t panned out.

Howard will direct the film from a script by Hodson. Howard, Brian Grazer, and Jed Brody will also produce for their Imagine Entertainment banner, while Powell and Dan Cohen will produce for their Barnstorm banner. Hodson will executive produce the film, which has no other casting attached.

Powell’s Career is Skyrocketing

This film marks the latest in a series of massive pick-ups for Powell, who has seen a stratospheric rise in his career. Powell has been acting since the early 2000s but made waves with his role in 2023’s Top Gun: Maverick alongside Tom Cruise, which propelled him into superstardom. He has since starred a wide variety of films, including rom-coms like Anyone But You and the disaster film Twisters. He will next be seen in the Hulu comedy show Chad Powers, and is also set to star in a remake of the Stephen King adaptation The Running Man.

The project will also be in good hands with Howard, an Oscar-winning director who got his start as a child actor and Happy Days mainstay before jumping behind the camera. He has since directed films such as Apollo 13, which was nominated for nine Oscars, Rush, In the Heart of the Sea, and The Da Vinci Code franchise. His next film, Eden, a thriller starring Jude Law, Sydney Sweeney, and Ana de Armas, hits theaters in the U.S. on Aug. 22, 2025.

No release date for the firefighter film has been released. Powell‘s The Running Man hits theaters on Nov. 7, 2025.
