‘Harold & Kumar’: ‘Cobra Kai’ Creators to Write & Direct New Sequel!!

Harold and Kumar may not be going back to White Castle, but the duo has one last adventure left in them. THR reports that a new Harold & Kumar sequel is in the works, with Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald all writing the film with Hurwitz and Schlossberg directing. It’s also being reported that both John Cho and Kal Penn, who portray the titular characters of Harold and Kumar, respectively, are expected to return, but neither has signed a deal yet. Hurwitz and Schlossberg released a statement about the news, saying they’re fired up to bring Harold and Kumar back with the same “unapologetically R-rated, smoke-filled chaos that started it all.” No word on a production start date or a potential release window.

The first Harold & Kumar movie, which sees the duo go to White Castle, was released in 2004, and it was a smash hit. Not only did it earn acertified fresh 74% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, it also garnered an 80% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter, solid scores in a genre that is quite often looked down upon. The film even grossed $19 million at the box office against a $9 million budget, exceeding its break-even point. It was even written by Hurwitz and Schlossberg, who are both returning to work on the sequel years later — the definition of a full-circle moment. The Harold & Kumar franchise released a pair of sequels that saw the duo Escape from Guantánamo Bay and even celebrate Christmas together, but neither was as well-received as the original, even if they did earn more money.

What Else Have the ‘Cobra Kai’ Creators Worked On?

Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg also served as producers on Blockers, the 2018 R-rated comedy starring John Cena that’s currently not streaming anywhere and only available for rent or purchase on Prime Video. The duo even worked as producers on Plan B, another 2018 comedy that’s streaming on Hulu, and they wrote and directed American Reunion, the sequel to the American Pie movies. They are attached to write several upcoming comedies, such as ‘Til Beth Do Us Part and Grandma vs. Grandma, and they will work on 72 Hours, an upcoming film with Kevin Hart that’s in production.

It’s unclear at this time when Harold & Kumar 4 will be released.
