When he’s not filmmaking or touring to promote his latest projects, James Gunn can be found replying to fans on social media. But his latest interaction might shock many. While it’s no secret that Warner Bros. has canceled many projects, including titles connected to DC, the filmmaker revealed that the production company has shelved more superhero titles than we realized.
Over on X/Twitter, Gunn replied to a fan under the alias @the_Bradster007, who made a thread on DC Movies that entered development but never came to fruition. The list featured some canceled projects, like a scrapped third Michael Keaton Batman movie, Nicolas Cage‘s Superman Movie, a Cyborg solo film, and a solo Ben Affleck Batman movie, to name a few. His response was short, stating that the user made a great list but added that there’s more. Unfortunately, he didn’t clarify what he meant by that, but considering the list that the user made, as well as the other known projects that were not mentioned in the thread, perhaps not saying what those were was the right move, especially if they’re tied to NDA’s or might cause unwanted rumors.
When Gunn became co-chair of the DCU with Peter Safran, a handful of DC projects were scrapped as Gunn wanted to remake the DC universe. Some of these projects include a third Wonder Woman movie, and sequels to Black Adam and Man of Steel, just to name a few. Even before Gunn‘s leadership, Warner Bros had scrapped a handful of projects. One of the most recent ones was Batgirl, which was supposed to feature Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon, J. K. Simmons as James Gordon, Brendan Fraser as Firefly, and Keaton as Batman.
List of Scrapped DC Projects
Outside the list that Gunn responded to, many DC superhero adaptations were either stuck in “development hell” or were pitched to some degree but eventually never came to fruition. Warner Bros. and DC have a long list of projects that span years, including the 60s, which shows that this franchise had plenty of ideas but only managed to execute some of them.
Over in the DCEU, Variety reported that Jared Leto would get his own Joker movie, but it was ultimately canceled, along with Harley Quinn vs. The Joker. There were also plans to bring Green Lantern to the DCEU, with ScreenRant reporting that it would feature Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter reported that there was speculation that Ryan Reynolds would make a cameo. But unlike many projects, this one was repurposed to become the upcoming DC TV series Lanterns.
Speaking of television, Metropolis would get the Gotham treatment, with a series that follows Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. According to Deadline, Gotham‘s John Stephens and Danny Cannon were listed as executive producers, along with Warner Bros. TV. It was later reported that the show was being redeveloped, and there haven’t been any future updates since.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, as many other DC characters like Teen Titans, Deathstroke, and many more, suffered the same fate and only time will tell if they will enter the big screen.
Superman enters theaters on July 11, 2025.
