‘Lilo & Stitch 2’ is Officially in the Works!!

Well, that didn’t take very long. After a successful debut in cinemas, the Lilo & Stitch movie has proven to Disney that some of its live-action ideas can still be hugely profitable. That’s why the studio announced today that the adventure is far from over: Lilo & Stitch 2 is already in the works. A release date is yet to be revealed.

The announcement was made with a fun video in which an irreverent-as-always Stitch drives through the Disney Burbank studio lot in the iconic pink car and the number 2 can be seen everywhere. The video ends with Stitch drawing the title Lilo & Stitch 2 title in the parking lot. It’s way too early for details of the sequel, but it makes sense that Disney would have to move fast on it. Contrary to her 2-D animated counterpart, real-life Lilo (Maia Keahola) won’t stay young forever, so it wouldn’t be surprising if production started sooner rather than later.

Lilo & Stitch quickly became a standout — with over $900 million raked in at the global box office, the movie is currently the third highest-grossing title of 2025, losing only to A Minecraft Movie and the Chinese hit Ne Zha 2. The kids’ adventure has immensely outperformed other juggernauts, like Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning and Marvel StudiosThunderbolts*. The performance of Lilo & Stitch in cinemas is a breath of fresh air for Disney, since their previous live-actionSnow White was considered a box office bomb that made the studio reconsider some of its next attempts at live-action retellings.

What Will ‘Lilo & Stitch 2’ Be About?

Long-time fans of Lilo & Stitch know that there are plenty of stories that Lilo & Stitch 2 could use as inspiration. After the success of the 2002 animated movie, the franchise got sequels and TV series that expanded the story, and one of the most notable was Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch. In it, Stitch tries to adapt to a new life in Hawaii, but starts to get nervous at the idea of becoming his old evil self and accidentally hurting Lilo.

Despite the existing material for the sequel, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Disney decided to go with a new story, just like the studio did with Mufasa: The Lion King. In any case, fans can already start celebrating the sequel — but for now they will have to go to theaters if they want a rewatch, because Disney is yet to reveal when the blockbuster is going to hit streaming platforms. Given how well the movie has been performing at the global box office, it will be a while before we can check it out in our homes.
