If there’s one thing a lot of people care about in this world, it’s their pets. To fans delight, the same could be said for Superman in the upcoming James Gunn film, Superman, hitting theaters on July 11. In a new sneak peek shared last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, we got a glimpse into the one-on-one dynamic between Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) and Superman (David Corenswet). In the sneak peek, Superman bursts into Lex’s office, demanding to know where the dog is. The dog, as revealed in a mumbled line by Lex, is Superman’s dog, Krypto. Superman’s John Wick impression in the scene honestly seems to be a perfectly reasonable reaction to his precious pup going missing, especially at the hands of Lex Luthor. Now why Lex allegedly taken the Super Dog remains to be seen, but it seems like Superman will not be letting it go, and we don’t blame him!

Superman’s Krypto Was Actually Based on James Gunn’s Real-Life Dog

Who is Krypto anyway? Krypto is Superman’s childhood dog now with him on Earth. When Gunn announced that Krypto would be a part of the movie, he also compared him to his own dog, Ozu, who is apparently a real troublemaker. Gunn asked himself, “how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?” Most everyone with a slightly rambunctious pet probably has the same nightmare feeling of their dog or cat becoming superpowered. Gunn has also since compared the Super Dog to Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Rocket. He told Rolling Stone, “Rocket made the world ready for Krypto.” He says, “Krypto is way more grounded than Rocket, because Krypto is simply a superpowered dog. He’s just a poorly behaved dog, which is what my dog is. So he’s really easy and fun to write.” He says:

“The beginning of the movie is the first thing I wrote, with Krypto coming to Superman in the snow and Krypto taking him home. That really was about the tone of the whole movie. It’s a flying dog who wears a cape, but that led immediately to the world-building. And bringing all those elements into a Superman movie in a way that hasn’t happened before — that’s what made it exciting.”

We’ll have to wait until July 11 to see what all Superman does to Lex Luthor after Krypto’s dog-napping. That’s when Superman flies into theaters.
