‘The Thursday Murder Club’ to Release in the U.K. Theatrically a Week Ahead of Netflix Debut!!

We’re only two months away from the premiere of Netflix’s crime comedy, The Thursday Murder Club, based on Richard Osman’s bestseller. But while fans in the U.S. eagerly anticipate the big day, those in the U.K. will get to catch the film an entire week earlier. Digital Spy reports that The Thursday Murder Club will hit the big screen for a limited release before it lands on streaming in August.

Fans in the U.K. can expect The Thursday Murder Club in theaters starting Friday, August 22, after which it will debut on Netflix worldwide on Thursday, August 28. Directed by Home Alone‘s Chris Columbus, the “whodunit with teeth” adapts Osman‘s first book in the eponymous series and follows a group of four buddies in a retirement home who gather to solve murders for fun but find themselves caught in a real case.

These friends make up the lead characters in the movie, and they are ex-spy Elizabeth, ex–union activist Ron Ritchie, ex-psychiatrist Ibrahim Arif, and ex-nurse Joyce Meadowcroft, portrayed by Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie, respectively. In addition to these stars, The Thursday Murder Club features several more familiar faces and big names in the industry, including Naomi Ackie as PC Donna De Freitas, Daniel Mays as DCI Chris Hudson, Jonathan Pryce as Elizabeth’s husband, Stephen, and Tom Ellis as Ron’s son, Jason. David Tennant, Richard E. Grant, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Geoff Bell, Paul Freeman, Sarah Niles, and Ingrid Oliver also feature in the movie.

‘The Thursday Murder Club’ Is A Very Faithful Adaptation of The Novel

This exciting new film is produced by Amblin Entertainment, founded by Steven Spielberg, with a screenplay by Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote. In anticipation of its release, Collider caught up with its brilliant filmmaker, Columbus, who described the star-studded production as “quite funny and incredibly moving” as well as “a cracking, thrilling murder mystery.

Columbus also confirmed that The Thursday Murder Club will stick to the storyline of the first novel in Osman’s titular series, but will not be narrated by Joyce (Imrie). A couple of changes have also been made to the movie adaptation, which he elaborated on, saying:

Certain events and plot devices have been changed. Other scenes were omitted for time. But the essence of the book’s sharp, witty humor and the emotional complexity of each character has been preserved. The film is a very faithful adaptation of the novel.

The Thursday Murder Club is set to hit theaters in the U.K. on August 22, before arriving on Netflix a week later.
