Ryan Gosling is heading into space, and the latest look at the next big sci-fi adventure from the team behind The Martian is here. The poster for Project Hail Mary, the hotly anticipated space epic from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, has just been released, and the movie is shaping up to be an interstellar event. Based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel of the same name, Project Hail Mary stars Gosling as Ryland Grace, a high school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship with no idea who he is or why he’s there. As memories return, so does his understanding of the mission: solve the mystery behind a substance that’s causing the sun to die. The future of Earth depends on him… and he might not be as alone as he thinks.
The film is directed by Lord and Miller, with a screenplay by Drew Goddard, who adapted Weir’s The Martian into the Oscar-nominated 2015 film that starred Matt Damon. Goddard is back in deep space for another crack at Weir’s signature blend of science and survival, and he’s already set expectations sky-high.
“If you liked The Martian, I suspect you’re really going to like what we’re cooking up with Hail Mary,” Goddard previously teased to Variety, adding, “Chris and Phil and I have known each other for decades now, and I love their work. And then obviously, Ryan Gosling is one of the staggering talents of our time.”
Who Else Is in ‘Project Hail Mary’?
Gosling isn’t the only big name in the cast as he’s joined by Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub, and they’re joined by the likes of Bastian Antonio Fuentes, Isla McRae, and James Wright. Though initially set for a March 20, 2026 release, production wrapped back in January, according to Goddard, and sources suggest that Amazon MGM may be eyeing an earlier date if post-production continues smoothly. That wouldn’t be surprising, considering the buzz and momentum surrounding the film.
Project Hail Mary blasts off on March 20, 2026.
