We’re in our feels today after The Boys creator and showrunner, Eric Kripke, posted an incredibly heartfelt farewell to social media. Filming has officially wrapped on the title’s fifth and final season, with Kripke sharing the bittersweet news on his Instagram. The scene of the image is a familiar one, with Kripke standing in the middle of The Seven’s headquarters atop Vought Tower. Over him, a Creation of Adam-sized painting of Homelander (Antony Starr) with his arms outstretched perfectly encapsulates the last four seasons. Taking a moment to look up at the giant ceiling towering over him, Kripke’s caption reads,
“This is the last time I’ll ever be on this set. It’ll be torn down soon. It’s bittersweet, but my primary feeling is gratitude. We have the best cast, the best crew, the most fun story to write, and something that is impossible to predict: the right timing. You wait your whole career to have maybe two of those things, if you’re lucky. We got all of them. To #TheBoys family: thank you, I love you all. To the fans: thanks for watching, can’t wait for you to see the grand finale. That’s a wrap. (Photo by @karenfukuhara). @theboystv @primevideo @sonypicturestv”
The end of filming marks a moment that fans have both been excited about and dreading, as it spells out the end of the beloved series that has been such a joy to watch over the last few years. At times (actually a lot of times), it served as a mirror to the horrors of the world, while keeping a comedic edge that still allows audiences to escape inside its satire. And, if things are rough for the fandom right now, just imagine how difficult it must be for the folks who turned up to Toronto year after year to film something so different from what else is on TV screens.
‘The Boys’ Hopes To Stick the Landing
With a show as popular as The Boys, Kripke and the rest of the team are working overtime to ensure they nail the final season. Things are already looking terrific, considering they’re giving Supernatural fans what they’ve long been calling for through a reunion of sorts with Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins. There’s also the fact that Kripke is quitting while he’s ahead, closing out the series on his own free will rather than allowing it to wear out its welcome (even though there are a few spin-offs in development). The showrunner is also doing plenty of homework, studying titles like Breaking Bad and Lost to see what worked and what didn’t for the long-running hits.
