Olivia Cooke is about to make “a bloody good impression” on Robin Wright in Prime Video‘s new novel adaptation, The Girlfriend. The streaming service has just unveiled the first trailer for the drama series featuring the House of the Dragon star as the titular girlfriend and Wright as a mother who may have every right to be suspicious of her son’s new love. Based on Michelle Frances‘ novel of the same name, it follows Laura, the mother, as she tries to unravel the young woman’s intentions, whether they are social climbing or something more sinister. Viewers will find out what’s up when the tense new drama premieres on September 10.
In The Girlfriend, Laura has it all: a glittering, high-profile career, a loving husband, and a son who is near and dear to her heart. While she’s always wanted Daniel to be happy, nothing sits right with her about his latest girlfriend, Cherry, from the moment she meets her. The teaser shows the steamy, passionate romance underway between Daniel and Cherry, all as Laura notes how her son talks about her in a different way than all the rest of the women he’s dated over the years. Yet, subtle glances between the two women and shady shots of Cherry stabbing into something when no one else is looking give the impression that she has a devious plan in play. That all appears to be confirmed when it’s time to cut into a wedding cake and blood comes spurting out, with a quick montage afterward teasing how the girlfriend may threaten to bring Laura’s perfect life crashing down.
As the series unfolds, viewers will be made to question whether Laura is just paranoid or if there’s something wrong with Cherry that everyone else doesn’t see. The description teases that “The truth is a matter of perspective.” For Wright, The Girlfriend is an ambitious project, as she also directed and executive produced. She and Cooke are joined by Laurie Davidson, who plays Daniel fresh off of appearing in A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story earlier this year, alongside Waleed Zuaiter as Howard, Tanya Moodie as Isabella, Shalom Brune-Franklin as Brigitte, Karen Henthorn as Tracey, Anna Chancellor as Lilith, Leo Suter as Nicholas, and Francesca Corney as Millie. Naomi Sheldon and Gabbie Asher, meanwhile, adapted Frances‘s novel for television.
What Else Have Wright and Cooke Been Up to?
The Girlfriend marks Wright‘s proper return to television as an actor seven years after her stint on House of Cards came to an end. She was most recently seen reuniting with her Forrest Gump partners Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks on the ambitious Here, which got the cold shoulder from critics and audiences alike, though her turn as the wicked queen of Netflix‘s Damsel fared a bit better. For Cooke, however, the novel adaptation will mark her first role since House of the Dragon Season 2 finished airing last year. Production began on the Targaryen family’s third season back in March, with the season promising some major events from George R.R. Martin‘s books and an “experimental episode“ that will play with the fantasy series’s formula.
All six episodes of The Girlfriend premiere on September 10 on Prime Video. Check out the teaser trailer in the player above.
