‘Merrily We Roll Along’: Daniel Radcliffe’s Most Celebrated Broadway Performance Sets Theatrical Release Date!!

As plans for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series steadily progress ahead of its 2027 premiere, the franchise’s original stars have certainly been keeping busy, getting involved in several small and large screen projects. One such OG is Daniel Radcliffe, well-known for his titular role in all eight installments of the Harry Potter film series, which ran from 2001 to 2011. Subsequently, Radcliffe’s prominence didn’t end with the movies, as he went on to star in similarly successful productions, including the four-time Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Merrily We Roll Along, which, to date, is his most celebrated performance.

Radcliffe’s Merrily We Roll Along premiered in 2023 to widespread acclaim, and two years later, it’s getting a theatrical release as announced by Sony Pictures Classics, per Deadline. The outlet confirms that the musical will arrive in theaters beginning December 5 courtesy of SPC in collaboration with specialty distributor Fathom Entertainment. Directed by Maria Friedman, Merrily We Roll Along is also expected to debut in theaters in other territories besides the U.S., including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the U.K., among others.

As a revival of the 1981 Stephen Sondheim musical, the 2023 production chronicles the conflicted relationship between composer Franklin Shepard and his two lifelong friends, writer Mary and lyricist and playwright Charley. Radcliffe portrays Charley, while Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez are Franklin and Mary, respectively. Among the classic Sondheim songs featured in the musical are “Old Friends,” “Now You Know,” “Franklin Shepard, Inc.,” the title song, and one of the composer’s much-cherished scores, “Not a Day Goes By.”

How Well Did ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ Perform?

Before the latest revival of Merrily We Roll Along, a few others came to life in the past four decades, from 1985 to the 2022 Off-Broadway version. There was also a West End reboot in 2013, following two Off-West End revivals in 2000 and 2012, respectively. Speaking of the most recent musical, directed by Friedman, it was an outstanding success, earning back its $12 million capitalization in March 2024, just six months after its opening performances. On top of that, its four Tony wins include Best Revival of a Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Groff), Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical (Radcliffe), and Best Orchestrations (Jonathan Tunick). Merrily We Roll Along is produced by Sonia Friedman, David Babani, Patrick Catullo, F. Richard Pappas, RadicalMedia’s Jon Kamen, and Dave Sirulnick.

This December will see the theatrical debut of Radcliffe’s Merrily We Roll Along.
