‘Calexit’: Director Chad Stahelski to Helm Controversial Comic Adaptation!!

John Wick director and legendary stuntman, Chad Stahelski, has found his next project. Today, The Hollywood Reporter announced that the multi-faceted performer and creative will be serving as the producer behind a feature-length adaptation of Black Mask Studios’ comic, Calexit. As of right now, no further information surrounding who will helm the project, but Black Mask co-founder and the comic’s co-creator, Matteo Pizzolo, penned the script’s spec. It’s also unclear whether audiences can expect to catch Calexit in their local cinema or if it will be coming straight into their homes, as no studio or streamer has picked up the title at this point. But, with the names attached to the already well-known content, it’s almost certain that the production will go into a bidding war when the time comes.

If you were looking for something to fill the oddly politically on-time-shaped hole in your heart that The Boys will leave after it bows out with its upcoming fifth and final season, look no further than Calexit. The tale is set in a not-so-distant future America where the President has signed off on an executive order that would see the deportation of all immigrants. Out of all the states, California stands up to the leader and sets itself as a sanctuary state. Striking back, the federal government marches into Los Angeles and places it under martial law, which leads folks like Jamil and Zora — the story’s main characters — to put their lives on the line as a war zone smuggler and a leader of the Mulholland Resistance, respectively.

Chad Stahelski’s Full Plate

This year, the man who lent his directorial vision to the first four John Wick movies served as a producer on its big-screen spin-off, Ballerina. Although he’s taken a bit of a break from helming, he’ll get back to it in the highly-anticipated Highlander reboot, which is set to star Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe. Previously speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, Stahelski teased how he and the creative team will pay homage to the franchise that came before, while also paving their own path forward, revealing:

“We’re bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the Highlands to the beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong. There’s big opportunity for action… and it’s a bit of a love story — but not how you think.”
