Jane Austen’s most celebrated work has returned, this time in the form of a Netflix series. Casting for the new Pride and Prejudice has included some big names, and now even more have been added to the cast. After announcements that Emma Corrin would be taking over the role of Elizabeth Bennet and the incomparable Olivia Colman would take on her mother, Rufus Sewell has joined the family as Mr. Bennet. On the less beloved side of the spectrum is the character of Mr. Whickham, who Enola Holmes’ own Louis Partridge will portray.
This most anticipated addition is, of course, who will play the reserved Mr. Darcy. After famous actors such as Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen made the role their own, Jack Lowden will be taking on the task. This ensemble cast wouldn’t be complete without the villainous Catherine de Bourgh, portrayed by Fiona Shaw. Interestingly enough, Pride and Prejudice is not the only work by Austen in which she will be appearing. Shaw will also appear in Focus Features’ Sense and Sensibility, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones. All in all, this production is shaping up to be a solid adaptation of one of the best books in literature.
‘Pride and Prejudice’ Continues To Be Timeless
There is a reason why fans and creatives continue to return to Pride and Prejudice again and again. Writer and executive producer Dolly Alderton acknowledged the power of Jane Austen’s work in a statement about the new series.
“‘Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it. Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy — it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life. With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count Pride and Prejudice as their favourite book, and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr Darcy.”
Every generation delivers a new take on this famous work to introduce viewers to one of the most famous love stories. Austen was an expert at weaving satirical humor and female characters who made decisions that their time afforded them. From the 1995 BBC series starring Jennifer Ehle to the 2005 Keira Knightley vehicle, this story never gets old. Netflix’s Pride and Prejudice is still in early development
