‘Coyote Ugly 2’: Piper Perabo Provides Promising Sequel Update to 25 Years Old Cult Classic!!

Another cult classic is getting the sequel treatment, twenty-five years after debuting. Coyote Ugly, directed by David McNally and released on August 4, 2000, is reportedly in talks for a follow-up production, as revealed by one of its original stars. The film was not much of a critical success but went on to smash the box office, grossing over $113 million worldwide. It stars Piper Perabo in her breakthrough role, along with Adam Garcia, Melanie Lynskey, John Goodman, Tyra Banks, Maria Bello, Izabella Miko, and Bridget Moynahan.

During a recent visit to The Hollywood Reporters suite at San Diego Comic-Con to promote her upcoming spy-thriller series Butterfly, Perabo revealed that there has been “some discussion” about a Coyote Ugly sequel. This comes five years after Banks claimed that she had been lobbying the original production team for a sequel for years. Not to mention, there has been talk of a sequel over the years, which Perabo also confirmed. Without divulging much, the actress said:

There has been some discussion about that. Some things are being discussed. I can’t really say, but people that were doing it are talking about some stuff.

When asked if the past conversations about a Coyote Ugly sequel were back on, Perabo shared, “Among the necessary,” adding, “Some people that were like, well, we don’t necessarily need, they’re like, ‘Oh, well I wanna be in it.’ So, there’s a lot of cooks in the kitchen right now, but things are moving around.” The Golden Globe nominee also couldn’t provide a script update, but she did mention that those who were “integral” to making the classic comedy “are in communication about how to do something more.”

How Well Do You Know ‘Coyote Ugly’?

Produced by Top Gun: Maverick’s Jerry Bruckheimer alongside Chad Oman, Coyote Ugly is set at the titular drinking establishment in New York City, where 21-year-old Violet Sanford (Perabo) works. As described by its synopsis, Violet is blessed with a velvet voice and moved to NYC to pursue her dream of becoming a songwriter, only to find her aspirations sidelined by the accolades and notoriety she receives at her day job as a barmaid at Coyote Ugly. The Coyotes, as they are affectionately called, tantalize customers and the media alike with their outrageous antics, making the establishment the watering hole for guys on the prowl. The movie holds a rotten 23% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 103 reviews, with the consensus slamming it for its “shallow, unimaginative story.

A Coyote Ugly sequel is still in discussion, with more details expected soon.
