Since it was announced to be in production back in 2023, Black Phone 2 has kept audiences perplexed surrounding its storyline. It made complete sense why Universal Pictures would want to follow up the 2021 film with a chill-inducing sequel, thanks to the overwhelming positive feedback and the gargantuan financial gain of the first, but the question remained — how will they do it? After all, the ending tied things up into a neat bow, with Finney (Mason Thames) not only escaping from The Grabber’s (Ethan Hawke) basement prison but killing the sadistic madman in the process. But, as we now know, thanks to the first trailer, Finney can’t seem to shake the child killer even in death. As part of Collider’s Exclusive Preview event, we’re excited to share another look at the reunion between victim and villain in a never-before-seen shot of Black Phone 2.

Teasing how the storyline will go down, our first-look image features Finney standing in a glass telephone booth holding … you guessed it — a black phone. There’s a chill in the air, with our protagonist bundled up in a heavy jacket and snow falling outside. Also looming outside and staring directly at the young man is The Grabber, wearing his haunting white devil’s mask while the snow drops onto his greasy, stringy hair. It doesn’t appear that Finney can see his previous captor in the shot, as he’s as cool as a cucumber, continuing the conversation on the phone with whoever — or whatever — is speaking on the other side.

Black Phone 2 finds itself amongst great company this year, as the fall and winter seem to be the perfect place for highly anticipated horror sequels, like The Conjuring: Last Rites and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. Although Hawke and Thames might be the only two faces spotted in our exclusive peek, they’ll be joined by a slew of others, both familiar and fresh to the story. Reuniting with the pair following their work in the origin story are Madeleine McGraw (Ant-Man and the Wasp), Miguel Mora (So Help Me Todd), and Jeremy Davies (Saving Private Ryan), while newcomers include Demián Bichir (The Nun) and Arianna Rivas (A Working Man).
