‘Phony’: Connie Britton, Sam Nivola to Star in New Mystery Series!!

Few people return for subsequent seasons of HBO‘s hit show The White Lotus after their time on it is done. Connie Britton helped launch the show’s first season, while Sam Nivola starred in the third season. The two might not have crossed paths on set — until now. The duo is set to star in Phony, a new mystery series that has been ordered at Hulu, according to recent reports. Britton plays Ellen while Nivola plays Sonny. Ellen is Sonny’s mother, the latter who is concerned that an impostor has replaced his mother after he survives a car accident. The mother-son duo is particularly close, as Ellen is a single mother and Sonny’s best friend. Additionally, she is the principal of his high school, and Ellen loves Sonny more than any of her students. Anthony King is the showrunner and an executive producer.

Britton spoke to Collider‘s Isabella Soares when Phony was in the early stages of development (she’s also an executive producer) and revealed that she and her co-star connected over working on a Mike White set. The actress gushed about Nivola, saying,

“Sam was so wonderful to work with. He is hilarious. He’s just got such a heart of gold. We did talk about The White Lotus. I think our experiences were so different because the seasons were so different, you know, but he was just really great to work with. We both talked about how much we love to work with Mike White, and it was really fun to compare notes on that.”

Britton is a TV darling and has starred in numerous shows over the years. The White Lotus is just one in a line of memorable performances on shows like Friday Night Lights, Nashville, American Horror Story, and 9-1-1. While there has been talk of rebooting Friday Night Lights, Britton told Soares that she’s not involved in it but had some advice for the new cast. “Try to make it your own. Give yourself ownership over it, and love it. Know that you’re all trying to accomplish something that feels special,” she said. Nivola‘s star is on the rise, having been part of successful shows in the past several months, including The White Lotus and The Perfect Couple opposite Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber.
