It’s a battle of old school vs. newish school in an exclusive to Collider sneak peek of the upcoming dark comedy, Honey Don’t! Once again striking out on his own and away from his long-running and recognizable collaborations with his brother, Ethan Coen steps behind the camera to bring the second in what he’s dubbed a lesbian B-movie trilogy following 2024’s Drive-Away Dolls. Reuniting with the director is leading lady, Margaret Qualley (The Substance), who will appear in a totally different role in the second film of the series. This time, she’s joined by Aubrey Plaza (Agatha All Along), Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and more in an ode to neo-noir films with a modern queer twist.
Qualley’s private investigator, Honey O’Donahue, is calling in some favors at the top of our sneak peek of Honey Don’t! She might be a lone wolf when it comes to catching the bad guys, but she relies on the help of her peers to get the job done. Today, she’s spitballing ideas with Day’s Marty Metakawich, a fellow PI who can’t help but give Honey a bit of a hard time during her search for answers. The pair go back and forth, discussing the likelihood that the sound Honey’s investigating is a gun shot vs. Marty’s theory that it was simply a car backfiring and digs into why the former continues to use payphones. Essentially, the conversation is exactly what we’d expect from a Coen-backed film (compliment).
Honey O’Donahue (Qualley) is a small-town PI whose world gets flipped upside down after a woman is killed in what at first appears to be a car accident. But, as Honey does her incredible detective work, she comes to find that things might not be what they seem and that the death could very well be tied to a mysterious local church with an incredibly charismatic preacher behind the pulpit (Chris Evans). Filling out the rest of the ensemble are names like Billy Eichner (Bros), Kristen Connolly (The Cabin in the Woods), Don Swayze (On Swift Horses), Gabby Beans (Presumed Innocent), and more.
A Family Affair
Although Coen may not be working with his famous director brother, Joel Coen, as he has in the past for such classics as The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men, and True Grit, he will be working alongside his wife, Tricia Cooke, with whom he co-penned the script for both Drive-Away Dolls and Honey Don’t! The pair also produce the new film and are joined by Robert Graf, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner.
Check out our exclusive sneak peek at Honey Don’t! above and see it in cinemas on August 22.
