‘War Machine’ Sequel is Officially in the Works!!

It’s Jack Reacher vs. Cybertruck 2: Electric Boogaloo, because a sequel to War Machine is now in development at Netflix. The news comes after the Alan Ritchson-led thriller became one of the streamer’s top 10 most popular movies of all time, turning what could have been a one-and-done alien action flick into what will hopefully end up being a fully fledged franchise.

Netflix just made the announcement now, three months after the movie exploded onto the streamer from almost nowhere. The film follows a group of elite recruits during the final stage of Ranger training, only for their ending to be rather rudely interrupted by a gigantic alien, well, war machine that fires deadly lasers at them — and not the kind that Dr. Evil would find appropriate.

Alongside Ritchson, the cast of War Machine included Dennis Quaid (The Rookie) as Sheridan, Stephan James (If Beale Street Could Talk) as 7, Jai Courtney (Suicide Squad) as Squad Leader, Esai Morales (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning) as Torres, Blake Richardson (The Boys in the Boat) as 15, Keiynan Lonsdale (Love, Simon) as 60, and Daniel Webber (The Dirt) as 57.

How Successful Was ‘War Machine’?

War Machine was a massive success for Netflix, even if there’s no traditional box office to measure it by, as the biggest number involved here is the most important one because it’s officially one of Netflix’s top 10 most popular movies of all time, which is basically their version of joining the billion-dollar club. And considering it only debuted in March, that’s absolutely staggering. It debuted at No. 1 on Netflix’s Top 10 English film list in March 2026, and unlike a lot of streaming action movies that vanish after one weekend, it kept showing up for weeks and weeks. By mid-April, it was still appearing in Netflix movie Top 10s across the world.

Critically, it was a solid success too, although it was seen as a really fun genre movie, rather than a masterpiece. Collider’s Aidan Kelley gave it a 6/10, saying it “does indeed struggle to stand out in a crowded subgenre of alien invasion movies,” but also praised Ritchson’s lead performance and said it had “at least one truly great action sequence.” It’s not exactly Arrival with machine guns, but definitely the kind of sci-fi actioner that Netflix‘s audiences were obviously craving.

War Machine 2 is in development now, while the original is streaming on Netflix.
