All eyes in the horror world are on Zach Cregger‘s Weapons, which currently boasts a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and had a massive opening weekend at the box office. The rave reviews and big returns seem to be a clear case of Warner Bros. catching lightning in a bottle twice, after bringing down the house earlier this year with Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners. The success of Zach Cregger‘s Barbarian follow-up hasn’t gone unnoticed, as a new report suggests that a new prequel film following one of the film’s most pivotal characters (who is destined to be a horror icon) may be in the works.
It would be a disservice to Weapons to give too much away about the famously ambiguous horror film’s plot, but one character who is a pivotal driving force is the mysterious Aunt Gladys (Amy Madigan). Similar to Barbarian, Weapons follows a nonlinear structure that follows the characters through their perspectives of their own chapters rather than a more linear real-time format, and according to the new report, a segment following Aunt Gladys and her backstory was initially included but later cut from the final film. This leaves much of Gladys’ origins shrouded in mystery, and the new proposed prequel project would be all about what Aunt Gladys was up to before the twisted events of Weapons took place.
Weapons initially drew attention for its brilliantly ambiguous marketing campaign, which has continued to serve Zach Cregger well in his career as a horror filmmaker. Essentially, all the marketing reveals is that the 3rd grade class of Ms. Justine Gandy (Julia Garner) has completely disappeared (minus one student), and now a small town is desperate for answers on why their children left in the middle of the night seemingly of their own free will. Collider‘s own Ross Bonaime is one of the dozens of critics who had tremendous praise for Weapons, calling it “frightening, hilarious, and one of 2025’s best horror films” in his review.
Zach Cregger Has a Busy Slate Ahead of Him
The proposed Weapons prequel is still in the very early stages, and nothing has been confirmed yet, including whether or not Zach Cregger would return to the director’s chair. As of now, Cregger has several pans in the fire with numerous projects in development, most notably a brand-new Resident Evil film. The upcoming video game adaptation will tell a new original story within the world of video gaming’s most beloved horror franchise, and will also reportedly star Weapons and Euphoria star Austin Abrams in the lead role. Resident Evil is expected to debut next year on September 18, 2026, placing it just one week after DC Studios’ Clayface movie, which is fitting given that Cregger recently shared he wrote a script for a satirical DC Comics spin-off titled Henchman. If those two weren’t already big enough, Cregger also has plans for a mysterious sci-fi movie titled Flood.
While a possible prequel may be on the way, Weapons is in theaters now.
