The Extraction spin-off series already has a lot going for it. The universe based on the Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Doomsday) film series, Omar Sy (Lupin) in the lead and the Russo Brothers producing are an excellent combination. Now, however, Netflix has decided to add another huge name into the mix: Natalie Dormer has officially joined the series in an undisclosed role. Netflix is yet to reveal when the series is expected to debut in the catalog.
At this point, we don’t know how the upcoming series will connect with the movies or if it’s going to be its own thing. We do know that the movies’ fast-paced setting and tension will be important elements of the show. In the story, Sy will play a mercenary who takes on a mission to rescue hostages in Libya. He will be in a difficult position, trying to operate in the territory of warring factions while dealing with his own emotional wounds. Per Netflix, the series main themes include trauma, betrayal and moral conflicts.
Dormer rose to popularity after taking on two major roles: she played the fan-favorite Margaery Tyrell in Game of Thrones and Cressida in the The Hunger Games film series. Recently, she’s starred in Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, the mystery series White Lies, and in the 76% Rotten Tomatoes thriller The Wasp. The cast of the Extraction spin-off series also features Boyd Holbrook (The Sandman).
Who Is The Team Behind The Extraction Series?
The upcoming new series is helmed by Glen Mazzara, who will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Mazzara is no stranger to thrillers that delve deep into the morals of its characters and that touch on political aspects. He penned episodes of the critically acclaimed The Shield, Crash, and was the showrunner of The Walking Dead in Seasons 1 and 2.
The Extraction series is produced by the Russo Brothers, who developed the original 2020 movie with Hemsworth in the lead. When the movie became a major streaming hit, Netflix quickly ordered a sequel and a third movie is currently in production. Last year, the siblings told Collider that they were “hard at work” on the story and filming was planned to start in 2025, and that the new installment will hone in the dynamic of Tyler Rake (Hemsworth) and newcomer Idris Elba (Heads of State), who made a cameo at the end of Extraction 2.
Netflix is yet to reveal the release window and official title of the eight-episode Extraction spin-off series.
