Orlando Bloom could soon return to sail the seven seas as Will Turner should the beloved Pirates of the Caribbean franchise make a long-awaited return. Longtime franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that he’s working on scripts that would see the return of Disney’s blockbuster franchise with a sixth film. Bruckheimer has also revealed the script currently features a role written for Johnny Depp, who has played Captain Jack Sparrow in all five installments. Bloom, who starred in four of the five previous movies, seems to have a sure-fire plan for how the potential sequel will succeed. “I think the way to win on that one is to get everybody back,” Bloom told ScreenRant. “You know, if they can—if everybody wanted to go back. I think that would be a cool thing for the audiences because I think there’s a lot of people who enjoy the nostalgia of those movies today, right?”
While relying on fan nostalgia will be part of Bloom‘s plan, it is not the only piece of the puzzle. The Lord of the Rings star also highlighted the importance of having the right script for Pirates of the Caribbean 6, while emphasizing that he had yet to see anything. “I think my thing is, if the script was great, and ideally it was everybody, it would be kind of like in for a penny, in for a pound,” Bloom added. “That would be cool. But as yet, I’ve not seen anything, so we’ll see.” Should a sixth installment materialize, it is likely to draw significant interest. However, Depp‘s controversial nature may complicate things. The actor was reportedly dropped by Disney following abuse allegations made by his ex-wife, Amber Heard, though he was never formally fired from the franchise.
Orlando Bloom Would Love To Return To The Flying Dutchman in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’
While Bruckheimer works to bring Depp back as Jack Sparrow, the producer has previously noted that a potential Pirates of the Caribbean 6 will have room for returning cast. With Will now the immortal captain of the Flying Dutchman in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, there is a chance that any future storyline could find a way to include him. His near-beastly transformation in the fifth movie suggests that there are other angles for a potential Will Turner return, and the actor himself is quite open to the idea:
“I feel like what we got to do at the time that we got to make those movies, and [Lord of the] Rings as well, is that they really stand the test of time in a way, because they’re specific to an era of filmmaking. And, of course, who wouldn’t do that? If the script’s amazing. I think the thing that they probably want to try and do, and they’re thinking of doing, is how to do it. You know, like, do you bring in a female leading character that replicates Jack in some way? I think that the jury’s out on how to do it again, but if it was great. Everything is in the writing, right? Everything is on the page, and I’m sure there’s a way to create something. I would personally love to see everybody back.”
Should Pirates of the Caribbean 6 eventually make it to screens, it would suggest that it has navigated quite tempestuous seas to do so. The key to success will depend largely on the script. That much is certain, and in the meantime, Dead Men Tell No Tales screenwriter Jeff Nathanson has joined the project. Whether the sixth film materializes remains to be seen. However, there is still room for the franchise’s legacy to grow.
