‘Hex’: ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ Director Sets Up Next Movie at 20th Century Studios!!

After Ketchup Entertainment swooped in to save his Looney Tunes movie Coyote vs. Acme, director Dave Green is eyeing his next project. Better yet, he’s bringing BenDavid Grabinski, the mastermind behind Netflix‘s Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, along with him. According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, the pair have sold a dark and magical new pitch called Hex to Walt Disney Studios that will be produced under the House of Mouse’s 20th Century Studios. Green is set to helm the project with Grabinski writing, Andrew Lazar producing, and Mal Smith serving as co-producer.

The story of Hex is being kept under lock and key at this time, but it’s said to be set in an unusual town that gets even more strange when it’s beset by dark magic. Although the basic premise of the team-up is known, it’s expected to be a subversive spin given the past work that has defined their careers. It’s also set to reunite part of the team behind the upcoming Vince Vaughn and James Marsden buddy action comedy Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, which Grabinski wrote and directed, and Lazar is producing. That film, which is expected to debut on Hulu next year, similarly plays with its formula, taking place in the criminal underworld, and was also acquired by 20th Century back in 2023 during a red-hot bidding war.

What Other Projects Have Green and Grabinski Worked on?

A collaboration between Green and Grabinski, considering Grabinski was one of the most vocal supporters of the director, alongside the likes of Christopher Miller, Phil Lord, and many more, after Coyote vs. Acme was shelved by Warner Bros. Although he’s also known for helming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows and Earth to Echo, the live-action animation hybrid has been the focus of his career over the past few years, thanks to the company attempting to scrap it and use it as a tax write-down. Fortunately, the outcry from creatives in the industry who had seen the film, as well as public pressure, helped the comedy starring Will Forte and John Cena land a home with Ketchup and get a theatrical release date on August 26, 2026. Hex keeps him in the business beyond Wile E. Coyote’s legal battle with a new studio that will let him realize his vision.

Grabinski, meanwhile, has previously picked up the pen for the action comedy Skiptrace from Renny Harlin and the romantic sci-fi crime thriller Happily, which he also directed. His best-known work, however, arguably came from television. He helped create the 2019 revival of the classic children’s horror anthology series Are You Afraid of the Dark? before taking on his most ambitious project with Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. Premiering back in 2023, the animated show paired Grabinski up with the Scott Pilgrim comic’s creator, Bryan Lee O’Malley, to reimagine the story in a new way, where Scott disappears before he can even battle the evil exes, and Ramona ventures out to get answers. It debuted to a stellar 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes with the entire main cast, including Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, back in the fold.

Hex is early in development at 20th Century Studios.
