‘The Pirate’: Jason Momoa & David Leitch Teaming For High-Seas Action Flick!!

Yo ho ho, Jason Momoa may have a swashbuckling new film. After unleashing his Apple TV+ series Chief of War to rave reviews earlier this month and starring in the box-office-busting A Minecraft Movie earlier this year, he’s coming on board to produce The Pirate at Amazon MGM Studios, alongside The Fall Guy director David Leitch. The project stems from a script penned by Will Dunn and, if deals go through, it will be designed around Momoa as the star with Leitch in line to potentially direct. Talks are still ongoing at this time, though, with Momoa negotiating to produce through his On the Roam banner and Leitch joining Kelly McCormick through their 87North Productions.

At this time, little is known about the plot of The Pirate, though reports describe it as The Raid set on a pirate ship. Expect a no-frills action thriller on the high seas with fights both frenetic and brutal between the scoundrels that rule the waters. With Pirates of the Caribbean 6 still in limbo at Disney, it at least promises to fill that hole for viewers looking for some swashbuckling action. Leitch is the perfect director to take up that challenge, too, having previously helmed the fast-paced thriller Bullet Train starring Brad Pitt in addition to his aforementioned action-packed ode to stuntpeople starring Ryan Gosling.

The Pirate adds yet another role to Momoa‘s to-do list after an already busy year. He has two major projects coming before long, with Dune: Part Three set to welcome him back as Duncan Idaho, in a way, and Kitao Sakurai‘s Street Fighter movie casting him as Blanca. Before either of those films hits the screen, though, he has the crime drama novel adaptation In the Hand of Dante set to premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in September, the R-rated road trip comedy Animal Friends with Ryan Reynolds coming on May 1, 2026, and the much-anticipated Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow on June 26, 2026, where he’ll become DC‘s Lobo. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg for everything Momoa has planned over the next few years.

What Else Has ‘The Pirate’s Creative Team Done?

Not to be outdone, Leitch also has plenty on his plate. His next action film, How to Rob a Bank with Nicholas Hoult and Pete Davidson, has fired up quickly and is currently filming en route to a 2026 release. Back in May, he was also in talks to land the highly coveted directing gig on Netflix‘s Gears of War video game adaptation. The script he’s working with for The Pirate comes from a fairly prominent name in Dunn, who has twice had scripts featured on the Blacklist and previously wrote for Ms. Marvel. Another of his works, The Peasant, is also becoming a reality, with Dev Patel starring and making the story his second directorial effort after his 2024 action flick Monkey Man.

Details and deals are still being finalized for The Pirate.
