The Dexter universe has been part of the culture since the Michael C. Hall-led series debuted in 2006. Hailed for its sharp writing, exceptional performances, original story, and twisty narrative, the original show ran for eight seasons on Showtime. Recent years have seen various attempts to revive the series with Showtime’s parent company, Paramount, considering some ideas. 2021 saw the rise of Dexter in Dexter: New Blood, but the show was cancelled as the streamer opted to go with a different idea, which is now Dexter: Resurrection. Fans have long clamored to learn the origins of the character since the original series picked him up later in his careeer, and Dexter Original Sin was the answer. The show starred Patrick Gibson as Younger Dexter Morgan, Christian Slater as Harry Morgan, Molly Brown as Debra Morgan, and C. Hall as the iconic narrator. Season 1 also featured Christina Milian as Maria LaGuerta, James Martinez as Angel Batista, Alex Shimizu as Vince Masuka, and Sarah Michelle Gellar as Tanya Martin.

Why ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Was Cancelled

The second spin-off was well-received by critics and fans. It is rated fresh at 70% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers giving it 78%. Dexter: Original Sin launched to good viewership numbers, which earned it a renewal soon after. However, a merger between Paramount+ and Skydance had been looming, putting numerous shows at risk of cancellation as the new company streamlines its operations. Unfortunately, Dexter: Original Sin fell victim, with the new Paramount opting to proceed with one Dexter show, and they chose Resurrection. Still, Original Sin had not passed the threshold for cancellation, making the decision even more painful for fans.
