Another Scrubs icon is stepping back into the trenches at Sacred Heart Hospital, as it’s been revealed that John C. McGinley is back on the schedule to reprise his role as the ever witty and sarcastic Dr. Perry Cox. McGinley is the latest to add his name to the call sheet for the ABC continuation series, with others, including Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, and Judy Reyes also set to reprise their roles as J.D., Turk, Elliot, and Carla, respectively. This means that things are moving along rather swimmingly for the production, which hails from the title’s original creator, Bill Lawrence. It seems like casting announcements have been rolling out daily, so now all eyes are on Ken Jenkins and Neil Flynn, who will hopefully reunite with their old co-stars to step back into their roles as Bob Kelso and Janitor, respectively.
Audiences will remember McGinley’s character as the wisecracking mentor to Braff’s J.D., who wanted absolutely nothing to do with the young doctor. After becoming the chief of medicine at Sacred Heart Hospital, the series saw Dr. Perry Cox shift his career towards higher education after the hospital was turned into a medical school. There are plenty of plot details that are still up in the air about how the reboot will approach the beloved characters of yesteryear and where we’ll find them more than a decade later, but we presume that Dr. Cox will find his way back to working alongside the youngsters (who aren’t so young anymore) that drove him crazy in the flagship series.
Those who have been paying attention to McGinley’s movements shouldn’t be surprised about the actor’s casting news. He essentially told fans as much back in June, when he revealed to Remind Magazine that the project he was in the middle of — HBO’s untitled Steve Carell comedy series — was on track to “be wrapped by the middle of August.” He went on to say, “And then presumably I’ll be going off to do Scrubs.” Although he noted “there’s no offer yet,” he confidently followed that up with, “But there will be.” The powers of manifestation are all around us!
What Has John C. McGinley Been Up To?
In the more than a decade since Scrubs clocked out for what we thought would be the last time, McGinley went on to be a series regular in the TBS comedy production, Ground Floor, which also hailed from Scrubs’ Lawrence. Next up, as mentioned above, he’ll be partnering with fellow funny guy Carell in an untitled HBO comedy series, which Lawrence co-created and executive produces.
