Superman and Lex Luthor will be back for Man of Tomorrow, and it looks like the Justice Gang will ride again, too. Both Isabela Merced and Edi Gathegi responded to director James Gunn‘s announcement of the film on social media yesterday, indicating that both are onboard for another adventure in the new DC Comics universe. Man of Tomorrow will be released on July 9, 2027.
Merced, who plays the winged, mace-wielding Hawkgirl, reposted Gunn‘s announcement on her Instagram account, adding “See you soon.” Gathegi, who played the sardonic high-tech genius Mr. Terrific, reposted Deadline‘s article about the film, asking “Where does the story go next?” While neither confirms their presence in the film, it’s a strong indication that they’ll be back. All we know so far about the film so far is that Gunn announced it with a Jim Lee-drawn image of David Corenswet‘s Superman and Nicholas Hoult‘s Lex Luthor, with the latter clad in his battle armor from the comics. Despite their presence, however, Gunn insists the film is not a sequel to Superman.
Who Are the Justice Gang?
Sponsored by billionaire Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn), the Justice Gang is an assemblage of costumed heroes. As of Superman, it includes three members: Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl, and nominal team leader Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), who wields a Green Lantern ring. Gardner is the only member who likes the “Justice Gang” name, however. They’re allies to Superman, but they won’t go so far as he does to intervene in Boravia’s invasion of Jarhanpur. However, Mr. Terrific goes rogue to aid Superman in escaping from Luthor’s secret extra-dimensional prison. As the film ends, he and the Justice Gang intervene in Jarhanpur while Superman saves Metropolis from the fallout of Luthor’s villainy. It appears the team will have a new member going forward, in the form of the elemental Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan); he joins the team in Jarhanpur at the end of the film, and all but guarantees his entry to the team when he agrees with Gardner that “the Justice Gang” is a cool name.
Whether they’re in Man of Tomorrow or not, the Justice Gang are all over the new DC Comics cinematic universe. Fillion and Merced guest-starred as Gardner and Hawkgirl in the first episode of Peacemaker‘s second season, rejecting the title character (John Cena) when he applies for membership. Fillion is also set to reprise his role as Gardner in the upcoming HBO series Lanterns, which will center around fellow Green Lantern Corps members Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
Man of Tomorrow will be released on July 9, 2027.
