‘Alchemised’: Draco and Hermione Fan Fiction Set for Major Movie Adaptation!!

Fan fiction has always had a way of taking something and twisting it into a darker story, reshaping established worlds, breaking boundaries, and often telling stories the original creators never would. Now one of the Harry Potter fandom’s most infamous corners, Dramione (the Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger pairing), is officially crossing over into Hollywood. Legendary has snapped up the movie rights to Alchemised, the upcoming debut novel by SenLinYu, in a massive seven-figure deal reportedly worth more than $3 million. According to insiders, the outright purchase may even set a Hollywood record for book-to-film rights, at least outside of inflation, as per THR.

For those unfamiliar with the name, SenLinYu — or just “Sen” to the millions of readers who follow their work — is a titan of the fanfic world. Their 2023 story Manacled, which mashed Harry Potter with the bleak dystopia of The Handmaid’s Tale, has been read more than 10 million times on AO3, while Goodreads reviewers handed it over 100,000 five-star ratings. It’s not exaggeration to say it reshaped Dramione fandom itself, with readers calling it “traumatic,” “brilliant,” and “better than most published novels.”

“I’m honored by Legendary’s incredible enthusiasm for the project and can’t wait to see the world of Paladia come to life,” said SenLinYu in a statement.

What Is Alchemised?

Like so many breakout debuts, Alchemised began as fan fiction before being “transfigured” into its own beast. At its core, it’s still dark romantasy — brooding necromancers, crumbling estates, corrupt guild families, and a heroine struggling to remember who she once was. The story follows Helen Marino, an alchemist and healer whose hidden memories may hold the key to survival. Sent into the clutches of a necromancer determined to unlock her mind, Helen must fight to protect the last scraps of her identity while uncovering the deadly secrets of her captor. Penguin Random House’s Del Rey imprint is releasing the novel September 23 with a whopping 750,000-copy first printing and translations lined up in 21 languages.

This isn’t the first time fan-fiction has seduced Hollywood — E.L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey was famously born from Twilight fanfic. But what makes Alchemised edgier is its unapologetic fandom roots. Dramione isn’t a fringe corner of Potter fandom; it’s one of its loudest, wildest, and most imaginative subcultures. Millions of readers have already consumed Sen’s stories online, which makes Alchemised less of an untested gamble and more of a guaranteed phenomenon.
